Us vs Them

Hola chicos,

This week I would like to talk about the "us" versus  "them" mentality.  When I got my hair cut a month ago, I went to a friend's salon to get a trim because I did not have time to go to my regular salon.  However, I did not get the same vibe I get when I visit my regular salon.  I might have a little problem of talking too much when it comes to hair products.  However, at my regular salon, it is okay to talk freely on products I want to put in my hair, and to bring in my own products from home.  Look, I do like more natural base products, and I am glad I am getting a better understanding of what I am using for my hair.   I never meant to have a problem in the salon due to the fact I want to go to hair school.  I think it is okay to talk about products, and I think it is okay to have customers who want to know how to take care of their hair.  However, I think many salons might be suffering with women going natural.

What I do know is that if you are going to start this journey, you have to take control of your hair due to the fact that your hair cannot follow the same regimen as relaxed hair. I know that I might be behind the chair one day instead of sitting in the chair, and I will need money to keep a business running.  With that statement said, I do not want a place where I cannot discuss hair products, or have clients be quiet on products he or she are using between salon visits.  It is not an "us" versus "them" community.   We are all the same, and we have to work together.  Remember, every person is not going to go natural the same way, and have the same experience.

I need a salon, but I want to have control over my hair because it is mine.   I do not feel it is wrong to have conversations with others on hair products, and to discuss their daily routines.  In my opinion, this is the main reason the natural hair community is so strong on the internet.  I think many natural women want a salon now to be a place where they can work in conjunction with their stylist.   Many of us do not have money to run to a salon every few days for co-washes, deep treatments, but we will go to the salon.  Therefore when we go, it should be place of serenity, not get angry with the customers for having a passion for natural hair.

I will admit that some women are jumping on the bandwagon just because it is cool to be natural now.  However, there are many of us who want to change our lifestyle to become better people.  That is why "the big chop" changed my life; due to the fact I am not my hair.  I was a slave to braids, wigs, and depending on my every two weeks visits to the salon.  I do not wan't that anymore for my life.  I want to be part of the hair on my head, and not a by stander anymore.   It is nothing like having control, but I need my salon to support me, not make me feel bad on it.  I going to give you a visual on the place I want to be with my hair.  Now, tell me your thoughts!

Bye for now,
Shun :)

Color Me Again?

Hi everyone,

Well, Nic and I are apart for a while this summer and I only have myself and my hair-lol.  Anyway, I am starting to like my haircut.  I also have not colored my hair at all this summer.  Guys, I keep going back and forth about putting color in my hair again.  I still having problems understanding the moisture and protein balance, and I am having better results keeping the color out of my hair.  I think for me, I would have to visit the salon more often if I return to coloring my hair regularly.  You guys already know, I do not want to keep getting hair cuts because of color damage or not having a true balance of moisture and protein for my hair.  I do like my new haircut, but I want to continue to see my hair get to a healthy place.  Therefore, I am thinking I might not want anymore color right now to interfere with my plans on how I see my hair.  Therefore, look at my hair now, and when I had color. What do you guys think?

Bye for now,
Shun

Look at my hair!

Hey guys,
Well I having a great time this summer with my hair. I went to the salon for a trim, and got a haircut. I was not to happy about that, but what can you do. However, I am realizing the problems I am having with my hair might be how I chose to wear it. I like to wear my hair out, and only do a protective style at night. The stylist did say my hair was well moisturized, so I was overjoyed about that. I do not know if I confess or not, but before this hair journey, I was not a person that cared to much about her hair. I really treated my hair very badly. Again, this journey is showing me that my hair is beautiful and I can be in control of my own hair. On a side note, it does not hurt to have someone special who feels the same. With that, guys share your hair stories, and send a picture as well. Check out my picture!

I Needed an Absence To...

Hi everyone!
I know it's been a while since I've been on the site, and I apologize for my absence.  However, I believe I needed an absence to understand this journey I am going through with my hair.  This process is changing me as a person for the good.  I also hope it is changing each one of your lives as well.
I must admit it is so nice to see so many products for natural hair, however, that is where I am having a problem.  Your girl, has never been so happy to see so many companies cater to natural hair, but all these products are very confusing to a consumer like me.   I feel the big companies are jumping on the bandwagon to sell products, and many of these companies still believe some of us are stuck on stupid when it comes to hair products.
Ever since I have decided to be natural, I wanted to know what is going on my head and body.   I just cannot buy a product now, and not know what the ingredients are in a product.  On the other hand, it is just as confusing going to a salon, and everyone is using products, but people are not caring what is going in their custom’s hair.  That leads me to the final surprise, guys.  I want to learn how to do hair through beauty school.  I really want to have a better knowledge of hair products for myself, and understand how chemicals really work, and what is good for our hair and what is not.  I like where this journey is taking me, but I wish more of us would join us in this journey.

Shun

Angry Hair

Hey guys,
I got very upset last week about my hair!  I was supposed to have written an entry by now, but I could not.  I have experienced some breakage in my hair and I was mad.  I thought I was doing everything right when it came to my hair.  I do not like breakage, and I do not want to do the big chop again anytime soon.  I became natural because I learned the hard way that I was not taking care of my hair the right way.  So, I let the perm go because I had nothing to lose.   Nic, has always said, I could go from one extreme to another, but that is okay in my opinion if you are learning from your mistakes.  So, guys do not let a setback stop you from your goal, and my goal is to have the best hair for me.  That means healthy hair that might have breakage from time to time, be limp from time to time, and has its own style from time to time, as long as I get in a healthy place, that is cool with me.  So, boys and girls, let keep encourage each other to keep doing what we do naturally.

Shun

Power of Love Through Music

Love is a powerful feeling for most people.  Therefore, I was pleased that Nic asked me about what love songs inspire me.   I am a person that put things into groups.
  • We Are Family” by Sister Sledge.   I cannot even think of love without a great groundwork from family and friends.
  • Count On Me” by Ce Ce Winans and Whitney Houston.  A great friend shows love by being supportive of the people in his or her life.  I would not be who I am today without people who care for me.
  • Make New Friends But Keep The Old”.  Love means stepping out of my comfort zone and try different things.  This is a song that teaches kids the value of old friends and the value of new friends too.
  • I Never Knew Love Like This Before” by Stephanie Mills.   When there is a great foundation, love has no boundaries.  It makes you feel anything is possible.
  • Never Would Have Made It” by Marvin Sapp.  I could never know the feeling of love without knowing there is a God who created love for all of us to share.
I hope this list will inspire you to all the possibilities love can have in your life.

Coconut Oil For The New Year

Hey Guys,
Well I am officially in love with extra virgin coconut oil.  This oil is great for the whole body.   Some of you all can even go to your local Wal-Mart to purchase this oil.  I went on a wonderful trip during the holidays that proved to me that coconut oil is the oil to have on the go.  I was in three extreme temperatures and my friend never let me down.  This oil makes your hair so soft, and it helped me manage my hair very well.  I also was able to use it as body oil too!  Just make sure the oil is cold press and extra virgin.  You can get it at a natural health store or a grocery store.  I know Whole Foods and Trader Joe's or other health conscious stores sell coconut oil.  This is a great oil to try. (I have enclosed a picture from my trip.)

3 Days In

We both have been scarce this past month due to the holidays and enjoying time spent with our family and friends. It is crazy to think that Decemebr has come and gone so quickly that we are in the start of a new month and a new calendar year.  We both hope that this posting finds those eyes reading this posting happy, energetic and hopeful for another year of living life.
We started this blog as a means of doing something together with a greater purpose of providing helpful information, an escape from the hustle and bustle of life, and just a place that is fun, entertaing and resourceful.  We started our blog in July of last year, 6 months and counting, and have been pleasantly surprised how much we enjoy blogging and vlogging.
This year will be about all the things that we said before and so much more.  We are looking forward to another year of doing what we love to do naturally, with the hopes of inspiring others to do the same!  This year we will continue to work on our blog and adding more content to share with anyone that cares to see, lol.
Much love and bye for now!
Nic and Shun
